An eight race card is on offer for the first day of the Killarney August festival which kicks off early at 2pm with a two year old maiden over 8f. I’ve declared EXCELCIUS in this for his second start after a debut at Naas. He’s a fine big lazy colt that would have come on a good bit for that experience and I would hope that he’s good enough to be competitive in this today. The ground that day was as fast as he would handle and any rain that falls should help him rather than hinder him. A good draw in stall four will allow Colin ride him as he bounces and as long as he helps Colin I’m hoping for a solid run.

WOULD BE KING has become very frustrating as he’s a highly rated maiden after eight starts. We put blinkers on him today as we try to break this sequence and he wouldn’t have to produce his best form to win this. I’ve been wanting to step him up in trip as I believe that he’s a strong traveller through a race but he has enough natural speed to handle a mile around here. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we see him on his best day today and that hopefully we can move forward with him as he’s better than his recent form.
