We kick off 2018 Oaks weekend today at the Curragh and I’ve declared four to run on their seven race card (not including their charity race). We had a good drop of rain yesterday but I’m sure it only took the sting out of the ground but was certainly welcome as it will encourage some grass growth at least.

I’ve gone with GIGA WHITE in the first race over 7f as I think he’s ready to run back. I’m fairly adamant that he’s still not the finished article, physically and won’t be until this time next year. He meets a couple today that beat him the last time and with normal improvement, which I think he has made, I’d expect him to at least catch up with those two. History shows that some good horses have won this particular maiden in the past and if there’s that type of quality on show today then we will come up short. Ideally, he can be competitive and if not winning today will do next start and I’d imagine we could put him away after that to grow up.

CASIMIRO steps back up to 7f in the second race and we now know that he’s not one to run shorter. He seems well and I’m hopeful that he can be in the shakeup with a view that he may run back again quickly at Naas on Wednesday over 8f. He’s no superstar and may just be at his best at this level and we will try and just win again with him for now.

The Tote Scurry Handicap is one of the most prestigious races, at this level, on the calendar and is always a very competitive race to win. We took the view with ARDHOOMEY that we should run in this instead of the Minstrel Stks Gr2 as he just doesn’t see the 7f out well enough for that company and would be a stakes horse in a handicap in this race. He seems to love this track and is not ground dependent while weight won’t hinder him as he’s a big unit that can carry any weight. If things are as normal he could be the last off the bridle and the closer to the post that happens the better his chance of winning. Delighted and proud to have this big horse still running for us this summer.

The GR3 Angelsy Stks is another prestigious race to win and I’m asking VIADERA to try and win this for the team today. She is a lovely quality filly that showed a decent turn of foot over this course and distance when winning on debut on Derby weekend. She has trained well since and while I had every intention of stepping her up to 7f in her next start I held an entry here to have a look. With only six declaring it was definitely worth having a go and while I hope she can win it, there is still valuable Blacktype up for grabs if we run placed which is invaluable for these fillies.

Things are going along nicely for our team this summer and while we don’t have any GR1 runners we have a lovely team of youngsters that could grow into something special next year. It’s our building year which is still very exciting and hopefully we will reap the rewards as they mature, it’s the reason we all get up in the morning!
