Heading to Cork with 7 runners, 10th May 2019

Basic Law and Donogh

Above: Donagh O'Conor, who rides Chicago May in the Goffs Irish EBF Polonia Stks (L.), is a valuable addition to the squad.

The team head south today for an evening’s racing at the Mallow track. There are seven races on the card highlighted by a Listed sprint on their new sprint course and I’ve declared seven to run. The ground at declaration time was Good to Yielding which could go either way with or without rain.

CALIFORNIA DADDY is in the first race, a 3yr old maiden over 8f with 13 going to post. I’m a little disappointed with this colt to date as I thought he’d have won his maiden by now but seemed to keep bumping into one. His last start was over 10f and I’m not sure he saw out the trip. We drop back to the mile tonight and with a rating of 86 he sets a good enough standard and should make it a good test.

I send two to the start of the second race,an apprentice handicap over the 8f. PEPPERONI PETE is being kept busy as he only ran at Gowran on Wednesday evening when 3rd over 7f. The mile should suit him better and if it’s not too soon running back he should have a favs chance here.

SCORCHED EARTH has his first run in a handicap as we think conditions suit him in this race. He’s not a good work horse at home and seems to show better form on the track. As he’s still a baby I’ve put Donagh on him as he’s a very experienced apprentice and you never mix inexperience with inexperience. Donagh is very tall and 8-10 is as light as he would ever hope to do so hopefully he’s rewarded with a good spin. Blinkers are on for the first time as he looked timid last time at Cork.

RED STRIKER is a new addition to our team this year and is still a maiden after having five runs in England last summer. I’ve brought him along quietly by leading the babies and this would be his first serious question that I’m posing him and I’ve chosen to do it on the track as opposed to at home. We should learn plenty from tonight’s race and we can make a plan afterwards for the rest of the summer.

MEDICINE JACK steps up to 7f tonight after only running over this trip on four previous occasions. I’m playing with him now and trying to keep him interested and running him instead of working him at home and hopefully he will run back into form at some point this summer. Any rain that falls will help him but the trip is a concern.

We run on their newly laid sprint course for the first time tonight and I’ve declared two fillies in this valuable Listed fillies sprint. BAILLY is Colin’s choice as she is definitely the best in home work but there’s not much between my two. CHICAGO MAY has had a start at Navan and I thought she ran well behind Inverleigh. Both of mine are hunting valuable BLACK TYPE and I do believe they are capable of achieving some at some stage this summer. How the track will ride is the conundrum as we won’t know if there’s a bias high or low or not at all until this race is run. On ratings both of mine have a bit to find but I’m happy to be starting them and will continue to aim at this level with both for the foreseeable future.
