We start the Gowran flat season off this afternoon with a low key eight race card. I’ve declared three to run an a track that is described as yielding to soft with a dry forecast.

Our first runner is in the first race which is a 7f 3yrs only maiden, a median auction event that keeps the more expensive breeds out of it. BASIC LAW ran a fine race on debut at Naas on the opening day of the season and he took that experience well and should be the one they have to beat in this. That said, you can never be sure in an Irish maiden and being drawn 12 of 16 around this sharp track is not ideal. I still think that he’s quite raw but 7f and soft ground should suit him and if he can handle the bad draw then he should be involved at the finish and hopefully is good enough to win.

We have to wait until the sixth race for BASRAH BREEZE to line up in the fillies maiden over just shy of the 10f. I did think about starting her in the first race but we felt that 7f around here can ride very sharp and that going 10f will allow her to find her feet and not feel so rushed on her first start. If this trip is not beyond her then she could run well but I do have a little doubt about her getting 10f. Maybe I should have started her at 8f but she is ready to run and we will learn plenty about her today.

The 10f 3yrs and up maiden is where JOHNNY DRAMA has his third career start after failing by the minimum margin over 12f on the last day of last season. Again our problem is the trip but as there are no 12f races at the moment we needed to start him before the ground dries up. He needed every yard of the 12f the last day and although he has sharpened up a lot for that experience the pace of others could do him today. The lack of 12f races is frustrating at this point of the season so we just have to think outside the box with a horse like this lad. He will qualify for handicaps after today which will open up his options and I believe he could make into a decent staying type in time. I need it to stay soft for him to have a winning chance today, the drier the ground gets the worse his chance becomes.
