Day 1 of Killarney Aug Festival

The August Killarney meeting kicks off today and it’s one I look forward to every summer as it’s the only time that I make an effort to stay away for a few nights. Unfortunately the weather is not compatible and while we have declared on soft I’m expecting it to change to heavy with heavy rain forecasted since we declared.

It’s a mixed card and I’ve declared four to run in their four flat races. Kicking off with a 2yr old maiden over 8f I’ve declared CAMORRA among the 7 declared for his first start. I’ve him in all over the place this week but will go here as it’s a small field and will be ideal to teach him his job while still (hopefully) finishing in the five and so keeping him free from being balloted next time. He’s a nice colt by Zoffany who is ready to start but he really is a horse for next year. He will love the trip but how he will handle conditions will be something we will all find out together.

I’ve declared CALONNE in the 11 runner 8f maiden to have his first start and we are definitely concerned with conditions but I need to start him now as we’ve been very patient with him. It doesn’t look the hottest race on paper bar the fav and I would hope he can be competitive if handling the ground.

CHERRYVILLE has dropped into the lowest grade and while she is lightly raced, she needs to show form in a race of this nature to survive a bit longer here. Again the ground is a concern but if not an excuse I would hope that she can run well . She will be entered in a maiden claimer next week at Bellewstown unless she wins today. I’m claiming 10lbs off her with Johnny Shinnick to give her every chance.

RED STRIKER should appreciate the ground and it should make this 8f easier for him as I’m of the opinion that he needs at least 9f now. If he helps us out he’s definitely up to winning a race of this nature but things need to fall right for him.
