French Rain Colin & Ger

After a short (way too short) trip to Killarney we are back up to the Curragh tonight for their important Debutante and Futurity card. Both are Gr2 races for 2yr olds and interestingly the colts race is worth a bit more than the fillies even though they are the same race.
We declared on yielding to soft with a good forecast so it may ride on the tacky side.

I’ve declared two nice fillies in the Debutante Stks which looks like being a cracking renewal of the race. SOUL SEARCH would be the most mature of my two at this moment and is the most experienced as this will be her 3rd start. I did a silly thing by dropping her back in trip the last day in the Angelsey but claiming some blacktype with her made it worthwhile. Today’s 7f will suit her better and being by Zoffany she should also appreciate some give in the ground. I like this filly and see her growing into a smashing 3 year old and while we still haven’t won her maiden yet that is basically a matter of timing as these stakes races are important to be in if good enough.

FRENCH RAIN is another smart filly and while it would have been nice to keep these two apart I can’t stress the importance it is to gain blacktype for the fillies paddock value. This filly is definitely more a next year lady and while she has won her maiden in good style here over 6f. this could be a tough ask on only her second start. This race will point us in the right direction for both fillies going forward as we should learn what level they can actually play at which will help me place them accordingly. Hopefully they both can be competitive at this exalted level.

JUSTIFIER has done well on his two starts to date and while he won his Listed race easily enough, it was only 12 days ago and running back quickly is always a risk. He beat today’s favorite when winning his maiden but that colt made huge improvement from that start and is a different proposition now. We like our colt and see him as a nice staying type next summer so hopefully he can make the step up in grade today.
