BUY BACK BOB got the ball rolling on Friday night at Navan by winning the 3yr old only 1m 2f contest. Given a brilliant ride by Keagan who kept us all on the edge of our seats. The pair waited until the last minute to slip through a fairly narrow gap to claim, what was in the end, a comfortable win. It was also another victory for Mrs Patino, of the Oaks winning SNOW FAIRY. Probably not quite up there with the highs of winning the Oaks but an excellent victory non-the less!
Cork was the big meeting of the weekend and we set sail to the South with high hopes and three fancied runners. JOE EILE was unlucky to be runner up for the second time when coming up against a better horse on the day in the 2yr old maiden. I’m pretty confident though that it will only be a matter of time before this Iffraaj colt will be standing in the winners enclosure for his owners Joe and Joe.
Our second runner of the day was the big one. CLONDINNERY was taking on a smart field in the 2yr old 6f Listed contest, the Rochestown Stakes. This has been a lucky race for us winning 2 of the last 3 runnings – and this year was no exception bringing our total up to 3 of the last 4. Clondinnery was the ultimate pro on Sunday and made the victory look easy. Under Keagan Latham the pair took control from the stalls and never looked in danger lengthening out to a comfortable victory.
I must mention that it’s a shame that having won four Listed races in Cork in the last few years, two this season, not one of our winning owners have received a trophy. It takes an awful lot to win these races and small tokens can mean a lot.
As usual the pair were welcomed into the winners enclosure by Pat and Moira Gilsenan and their entourage of friends and family. Pre race confidence must have been high as a mini bus was hired for the day to transport all of the Clondinnery fan club to Cork from all corners of Ireland.
Our luck changed once again for our third runner. BANK ON BLACK ran a very good second just being denied top spot in the closing stages of the 3yr old 6f contest. We mustn’t complain too much, it was a good days work, our second listed victory of 2010 and hopefully the first of many for Clondinnery.
The glamour and glitter that is Royal Ascot kicks off today. Shane and Bernie travelled over last night accompanying BERG BAHN and KNIGHTS TEMPLAR who run in the Sandringham and Britannia Stakes respectively. As you can imagine we’re doing everything we can to stop Ger getting all glammed up and charging to Ascot on the first available plane to socialise for the week. Luckily for him there are plenty of domestic meetings taking place at home this week, leaving Shane to fly the flag for the Ger Lyons team in Berkshire.
So best of luck to all of the owners for the week ahead home and abroad.
